Chaga, the “King of Mushrooms”, is a highly coveted medicinal mushroom that only grows on birch trees in the northern hemisphere. With a long history for increasing health & wellness, scientific studies have started to catch up to Chaga in support of its health claims. From scientific literature, we are seeing it to increase immune system activity, aid in digestive health, increase physical endurance, and have anti-cancer, anti-viral, and anti-inflammatory effects.

Funny enough,  strictly-technical-mycological-nerdy speaking, Chaga is actually a sclerotium (a fungal mass of mycelium), and not a mushroom…but close enough. The Chaga fungus is a parasitic growth that infects many trees, yet it only grows it’s identifiable black charcoal-like body on birch trees.

Earliest recorded history found in some interpretations of a herbal medicine book written 100 B.C. by Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing. The people that have long inhabited the Siberian mountains have a long history of ingesting chaga in powder form, rubbing onto skin, and even smoking it. But the most common delivery method was a daily hot brew similar to how we drink coffee. Eventually, the use of chaga spread east and west. Even Ainu, the indigenous people that live in Hokkaido in Northern Japan, have a long history of use.

A Medical Academy of Science in Russia approved chaga to support a healthy immune system in 1955. Popularization in the western world increased when in 1968 a Russian Nobel Prize winning novelist Alexandr Solzenitsyn book Cancer Ward mentioned the drinking tea.
